Deck Cards

A "DECK" CARD...

(also called "END Card"), is a thin cardboard placed on top of USPS shrink-wrapped bricks of stamp panes & booklets. The deck card provides protection and support for the stack of shrink-wrapped stamp panes during shipping.

Pane position diagrams (ppd) show the position of a specific pane as printed on the larger press sheet. That position is important to the printer for quality control. These PPDs appear in the selvage of quite a few U.S. stamp panes. However, for some panes and all booklets, determining the position is impossible because the PPD is either not printed or it is trimmed off when the press sheet is cut into individual panes.

Beginning in 2005, stamp printer, Ashton Potter USA, began printing a number in the top corner of the Deck cards to designate the relative pane position in the press sheet. As shown by the number 12 on the example Bonsai deck card here >>>

This position number is used by the printer for quality control purposes. All of the stamps in a single deck are from the same position of the press sheet.
